Like many Puerto Ricans on the U.S. mainland, Penn State student Valeria Mercado Medina spent a harrowing few days in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria when she wasn’t able to contact her family at home. She is the president of the Penn State Puerto Rican Student Association.
